On Monday April 16Th, the Annual Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association Awards ceremony was held at the Walkersville VFC Banquet facility.
Ex-Chief Brent Harne received the Dr. James Marrone - EMS Member of the Year Award for Bravery.
On May 28Th, 2011 while traveling with his family on Route 15, Brent heard a Rescue assignment dispatched for the Water Rescue near where he was traveling. Ex-Chief Harne arrived well before Fire/Rescue apparatus, and found a vehicle with victim inside, which was partially submerged in a pond. Ex-Chief Harne assisted Frederick City OFC Alcorn into the water in a attempt to free the victim.
With the doors of the vehicle being locked, and the car submerging more, a decision was made to break out the drivers side window. Once OFC Alcorn completed this task, water began to fill up the vehicle quickly. Ex-Chief Harne was able to unlock the drivers door as the car submerged completely. The two rescuers were able to reach in and pull out the victim, and then get her safely to the bank of the pond.
At this time Fire and Rescue apparatus arrived. The victim was treated and released on the scene by EMS personnel.
Along with this award, Brent has also received an award for the same incident from the Frederick City Police Department (Presented by Chief Dine), and a Special award from the Fire Company at the MVFC Annual Awards Banquet.
A second award was given to FF Bion Winpigler of Citizen's Truck Company 4/Middletown VFC #7.
Bion was inducted into the FCVFRA Hall of Fame for his years of service; mostly with Truck Company 4....

Christopher Goodman was elected to the Middletown Council after voting took place on Monday. Chris has been a member of the MVFC since 1990, and has served as a Fire Officer and a Board of Director. See comments below from the Frederick News Post.
MIDDLETOWN -- Christopher I. Goodman, a member of Middletown's planning commission, became the newest addition to the town council Monday.
Middletown residents elected Goodman by 215 votes, unseating incumbent Councilman Vincent A. O'Reilly, who got 205 votes.
Burgess John D. Miller, who was unchallenged, was elected to a third, four-year term with 318 votes, and Anthony M. Ventre was elected to serve another term on the council with 263 votes.
Earlier Monday, Goodman did not appear optimistic about winning, saying incumbents are hard to beat.
After the vote count, Goodman said, "I feel pretty good.
"I'm just ready to help do what it takes to continue to make this town the great place that it is. However, I have the utmost respect for Vincent and Anthony," Goodman said.
At 38, Goodman is the youngest member of the council.
Chris is the brother of James Goodman, who is the current President of the Fire Company. The Fire Company is looking forward to working with Chris and the other members of the town administrative board....

A picture from the past: Brunswick Building Fire

On April 17, 1994, Box Alarm 5-1 was dispatched for the building fire at the Brunswick Crab House, which was located at the intersection of East Potomac St. and N. Maple Ave. Engine 53 arrived on the scene reporting a working fire and additional resources were requested.
Tanker 7 (1991 International/4Guys) was the first unit dispatched from Middletown. It was as part of a water supply assignment. Water pressure was a issue in that part of Brunswick due to the multiple hydrants being used on the fire ground. When the Tanker arrived, they were directed to help establish a dump site near the fire ground, and to fill up near the Brunswick High School.
Soon after the Tanker arrived on the scene, Engine Company 7 was then dispatched on the call. Both Engine 73 (1981 Hahn) and Rescue Engine 74 (1990 Grumman) responded on the run with full staffing. When the Middletown Engine's arrived, they were initially assigned to East A Street, which runs parallel with East Potomac St. These units ran lines from East A to the rear of the involved structures, which now consisted of several buildings.
After several Ladder Trucks were moved into position, Engine 73 was redirected to Side A (Side 1 back in the day) to supply both Truck 4-1 (Citizens Truck Co.) and Truck 26 (Halfway/Washington County).
The units from Middletown worked on the scene well into the morning before getting released....
